Долна Митрополия носи името си от старинен град, наречен Митрополис, съществувал през римско време. Има хипотеза, че името на града произлиза от латинското Mitra и polis, т.е. Митрополис (град на бог Митра). За пръв път името Долна Митрополия се споменава в официален документ през 1496 г.

Интересни сведения как е изглеждала Долна Митрополия при започването на Руско-турската война през 1877 г. дава руският свещеник Вакх Гурьев. Той съобщава, че е имало само няколко едноетажни къщи и полу-къщи, построени от кирпичени тухли и покрив от шистови плочи. Всички останали домове представлявали вкопани землянки, в които селяните живеели заедно със своите домашни животни.

Особено и важно място в историята на град Долна Митрополия заема производителна кооперация „Българска захар“ и пуснатата в действие на 30 юни 1930 г. кооперативна фабрика. През 1948 г. тя става държавна собственост.

На територията на град Долна Митрополия се намира Висшето военновъздушно училище „Георги Бенковски“. То е наследник на богатите традиции на българската авиационна школа. 

През 1885 г. е построена първата училищна сграда. В периода 1921-1922 г. в Долна Митрополия се открива прогимназия, а през 1930 г. е построена напълно нова училищна сграда в центъра на селото. През 1970 г. е завършена новата (и настояща) училищна сграда.

В град Долна Митрополия функционира Народно читалище „Просвета 1927 г.“, основано на 22 март 1927 г.

City of Dolna Mitropolia, municipality of Dolna Mitropolia

The city of Dolna Mitropolia has been the administrative center of the municipality of Dolna Mitropolia since 1979. It was declared a city on September 13, 1977. It is located 10 km from the regional center Pleven.

Dolna Mitropolia takes its name from an ancient city called Mitropolis that existed in Roman times. There is a hypothesis that the name of the city comes from the Latin Mitra and polis, i.e. Mitropolis (city of the god Mithras). For the first time the name Dolna Mitropolia was mentioned in an official document in 1496.

Interesting information about what Dolna Mitropolia looked like at the beginning of the Russian-Turkish war in 1877 was given by the Russian priest Bacchus Guryev. He reports that there were only a few single-story houses and half-houses built of adobe bricks and slate roofs. All other homes were dug-out where the villagers lived together with their domestic animals.

A special and important place in the history of the city of Dolna Mitropolia is occupied by the productive cooperative "Bulgarian Sugar" and the cooperative factory put into operation on June 30, 1930. In 1948, it became state property.

The "Georgi Benkovski" Bulgarian Air Force Academy is located on the territory of the city of Dolna Mitropolia. It is the heir to the rich traditions of the Bulgarian aviation school.

In 1885, the first school building was built. In the period 1921-1922, a junior high school was opened in Dolna Mitropolia, and in 1930 a completely new school building was built in the center of the village. In 1970, the new (and current) school building was completed.

In the city of Dolna Mitropolia, there is a People's Community Center "Prosveta 1927", founded on March 22, 1927.
